PANAJI-Mr Rahul Barua, the secretary general of South Asia Foundation, the main organiser of the South Asian Film Festival (SAFF) on Monday said that in recent times, the number of feature films produced in South Asian countries like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh has considerably reduced due to common challenges like ethnic problem, terrorism and limited employment opportunities, with the film makers in these countries forced to undertake productions for television channels, which require cheaper cast and crew as well as limited technical expertise. 4th South Asian Film Festival in Goa from June 26 Over 50 movies from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka and an additional 12 selected Iranian films will be screened during the four-day 4th South Asian Film Festival to be held at Kala Academy here from June 26. The festival will be organised by South Asia Foundation with the support of Goa Government and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR). South Asia Foundation secretary general Rahul Barua, who was here to take a review of arrangements for the festival, while speaking to UNI, said this is the second time that the festival will be held in Goa and ''Yousuf'', a movie from Maldives would be the inaugural film. Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and state Legislative Assembly speaker Pratapsinh Rane will be present on the occasion. South Asian film fest from June 26 PANAJI: The 4th edition of the South Asian Film Festival (SAFF) will begin in Goa on June 26, 2009. Over 50 films will be screened at the "The festival hopes to create an environment of peace and harmony among the countries of the region," said Rahul Barua, secretary general of the South Asian Foundation that organizes SAFF. Barua said the festival provides a forum for film-makers to discuss their work, exchange creative and technical expertise in film-making and facilitates marketing of films from the countries within the region that will enhance mutual trade opportunities. Bangladesh will have a sizable representation at the next edition of South Asian Film Festival, to be held in the tourist paradise of Goa from June 26 to 29 this year. Eight feature and documentary films by leading Bangladeshi directors are to be screened including Humayun Ahmed's “Shyamol Chhaya,” a film on the Liberation War, and Tanvir Mokammel's “Swapnabhumi” and “Bastro Balikara”. Among other films by Bangladeshi directors are "Aha!" and "Megher Por Megh." Fifty-three films from eight SAARC member-countries -- Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Maldives -- will be screened at four venues in Goa.
